Why locals go
Quảng Ninh tracked toward 20 million visitors in 2025 — 15.5 million of them domestic — and the local formula is nothing like the cruise brochures: Bãi Cháy beach, a seafood table with printed per-kg prices, and a 290,000 VND-ticket day boat, or Lan Hạ Bay from Cát Bà at a third the price. The 2–4-million-a-night cruise cabin is the tourist product; Hanoi does this as a weekend, not a splurge. Best months are Oct–Dec and Apr–May: Oct–Dec is day-boat and cruise prime, May–Aug is swim season, fog can erase the karst from late January to mid-March, and Jun–Sep brings squall and typhoon suspensions.
